Come into my parlour...

Do not fear me, I am toothless.

Mary stayed out all night

Mary stayed up all night, curled her hair, wore her dress right
sneaked into the cupboard for her sister's shoes.
Mary's parents knew her well, thought she was young, so innocent
on all accounts that might have been the case, not too untrue -
But the world is most alive at night, in all it's wretched flashing trapdoor lights
and Mary did so want to dance dance dance.

Little girls awanderin like souls brand new
and the sky was dark, a winter blue
oh Mary won't you come back before curfew comes a'calling?

Heads so full of boys and books, of sweet motown and jazzy tunes
Mary wanted to do the twist downtown, be grabbed by the hand and thrown around
flung into the stardust of borrowed time
you have to be back home by nine.
Mary. You knew that. But still.

Mary looked like her mom just like on prom, her smile was big, she's so headstrong
smelled like vanilla, wet grass dew. She snuck down the water pipe, brain so dizzy
with her spirit so daring, light as air, she's going to break some rules,
don't talk to Mary about repurcussions, those are boring,
made for old people so they can look back and say they have regrets.
Mary regrets nothing.
Down the pipe, leakin' a dream of sink water, the metal thatthat hugged her bedroom window tight and Mary climbed down slid
no one would be there to catch her should she slip.

Chased the boys down winding paths, a spirited mind and beating heart
you don't need to be a genius to do the math. Mary doesn't need alcohol to be drunk,
Mary makes everyone lightheaded.
Her long dark lashes fully prepped for the fluttering request,
won't a fella buy a girl a drink?

Thrown in the towel call it a night? When are you coming home, Mary? Will it ever be tonight? Is tonight what you're living for?

Mary stayed out all night, Mary stayed out all night.
I can't tell when she'll be coming home
if she'll ever be coming home.

Crumbling bridges heart to heart follow you into the dark
there's no silver lining when I'm with you
stumbling, bumbling scraping knees thrown beyond the storming seas
world I have never known one like you.

Sawdust floors and oyster shells she does boys cruel but she 'means well'
darling there's no meaning in what we speak and seek,
she speaks 'take me down to the city lights tell someone that I'm worth the fight.
I want to hear what it is about me that makes you weak.'

Mary shouldn't have been outside, Mary crawled into my life in red hot chilli pepper heels.
Mary asked me to dance, and I should have left when I had the chance
but hook line sinker, I'm hooked.

She whispered sweetness in your ear, swallowed fire knew no fear,
openly asked you to flatter her and you saw that youth.
And coward that you are, blind expectation saw nothing more,
you're on the lamb, riding down the steep cliff
you'll be dead, and alone. All for Mary. In the deep end.
You bought her drink, something bright and tall
peppered with citrus and shook with olives
Mary will leave you midtrip, man, you saw her youth and you thought you saw it all
Now cycling bears and circus freaks you'll meet them all, there's a mask for each one that you'll meet.
Don't pretend that you're unshaken, even when you took, you're taken
even then you must have known what lay in store.
Now you'll never rest, you've tried to break a horse that was wild and masterless
Mary that meat eater, cannibal sixteen year old with glitter in her hair and her bright white teeth
It will take years and years and miles of crawling before you find your feet.

Take the boats down shore to shore sow the wind and reap the storm,
Mary I have never loved none as I do you.
And when we're strewn among the wreck beaten across the splintered deck,
we'll hold onto the floatsam and sink as one no longer two.

Maybe? Would you?

Tell me that I have your love,
that I have your love
and I'll forget to ask your loyalty.

Darling tell me that I have your love, even though you kiss everyone
tell me that I have your love for free.

There are no wiser men than thieves, devil juggling tempered steel
she should have said 'know you should have never believed me.'
You know better than to ask for more, you always knew what lay in store
Mary knew the very score from the while before.

Because a girl like Mary knows I mean well, I bear the tide and weathers the stale
wind that blows me to shipwrecked lands alone and Mary-less -
I brought you here too soon but soon as knew for something tells me that it was I that followed you.
Mary you young bright eyed pretty thing. You're a liar.
if there aint quite a scoundrel like me then they have yet to meet you.

Mary will patronise you wth her young eyes
say that she's still in highschool, my-oh-my,
her parents wouldn't like boys like you.
I loved you for your cheap glitter faith, casting sixes figure eights
this has all been one great Russian roulette I should have never touched.
now spin the cylinder, click the click, hold it in a shaking fist
I'm in this game knowing I was bound to loose you and everything.

Trigger cold and barrel shot, a spectacular bang, the inevitable dark
I should have never met Mary. Mary lied to me.
Hope is waning were faith is gone, my fingerprints smudged on icy cold
Oh, Mary why did you lead me on? Was it that I showed too much I was willing to follow?
I should have listened to the prophets of old
when they warned us never to love travelling strangers.

Mary stayed out all night, sparkling just like Christmas lights
smuggled out the lipstick from her mother's dresser drawer.
Curled her hair. Piglet curls. Blond and fair, pale as pearls
wanted someone else to do it when she boasted that she'd 'take on the world'
and she danced all night, danced all night. Didn't care.

Mary stayed out all night, I fought for you and lost the fight
aint no other worry you'll never see me again.
Mary you'll go back to school, will they paint your future, silver like a spoon
and exclude me, measuring out the foolery of our lights?
You tasted the city too little to know it's heart, I fell through your silver nets into the dark
you don't seem too worried about me now.
Mary I have loved you well, you're undeserving, and I'm not too swell-
but that you'll go out tomorrow night and stand somewhere causing traffic
ask the world for someone else to tell you your worth the fight
worth the fight.

You were never worth the fall.

AN: An idea I had for a long time, and yet further kicked off and perfected by the inspiration derived from Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros famous song 'Home'. If you haven't heard it, fie, you are a neandrathal! I think this can even be sung to the tune of it, if one were to try very hard.
